[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] CALL FOR ABSTRACTS International Scientific Conference for Students and Young Researchers on “25 YEARS OF TURKEY-UKRAINE DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS” Dates: 3-4 November 2017 Venue: Karabük University, Karabük, Turkey Karabük University, in cooperation with Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University and Center for Eurasian Studies, and with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine to Turkey, are pleased to announce a call for abstracts for an International Scientific Conference for Students and Young Researchers on “25 Years of Turkey-Ukraine Relations”, to be held on November 3-4, 2017 at Karabük University in Karabük, Turkey. The organizing committee invites bachelor, graduate and post-graduate students, as well as researchers in the early stages of their careers, to submit proposals on any topics related to Turkey-Ukraine relations. We hope this event will prompt fruitful discussions on a broad range of topics related to this field. Context In 2017, the two countries will celebrate 25 years of diplomatic relations that have, over time, gained the status of a strategic partnership. Meetings and agreements at state level have allowed relations to prosper, and have led to a visa-free regime between Turkey and Ukraine since 2012, with the possibility of travelling only with ID-cards providing a boost to the trade and tourism sectors. Furthermore, Turkey-Ukraine defense industry ties have also been booming recently.Turkey recognized Ukraine’s independence on December 16, 1991 and diplomatic relations were established between the two countries on February 3, 1992, although the history of relations between Turkey and Ukraine is much older. The Ottoman Empire and the Cossack Hetmanate were in contact in medieval times, while the Ottoman Empire and the Ukrainian People’s Republic (1918-21) were maintaining diplomatic contact at the beginning of 20th century, followed by the Turkish Republic and the Ukrainian SSR. Despite the many achievements to date, there are suggestions that bilateral relations have yet to reach their full potential. Moreover, the geopolitical context and security challenges in the Black Sea and Middle East regions bring new dimensions to the relations between the two Black Sea states, while Russia, NATO, and the EU continue to be important factors in the region. In this regard, the question of whether to evaluate relations between Turkey and Ukraine through a multi-lateral approach, or to limit any efforts in this regard to a bilateral form are still to be answered.
